Following the success of previous workshops in Washington, D.C. and New York City, we are pleased to announce two new 5w ACADEMY workshops in the U.S.
We are coming to Las Vegas!

2-day workshop: Information Graphics and Data Visualization

Our first two-day workshop is a comprehensive introduction to the creation of infographics and data visualization. With a mix of theory and practice, the workshop is aimed at professionals and students interested in developing the skills to produce engaging, insightful visual storytelling with their content.

We will learn how to gather and prepare data, the Do’s and Dont’s of working with numerical information and charts, and the principles of visual hierarchy, color, typography, illustration, and narrative to create impactful infographics.

Attendees will sketch out infographics, storyboard motion graphics and create/ publish their interactive data visualizations and web maps with the help ofTableau Public. The class will discuss award-winning projects and offer an overview of tools and strategies for creating infographics and data visualization.

by the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • understand the importance of infographics and data visualization in visual storytelling.
  • exercise good judgment in sources of information, data types, and visual formats.
  • conceptualize, sketch, and design effective infographics with multiple graphic elements, in print and online.
  • edit text for graphics to present a clear message.
  • storyboard interactive graphics and learn the fundamentals of producing animated and interactive graphics.
  • learn about the professional tools for creating infographics and explore the resources available to expand your knowledge.

1-day workshop: Interactive Data Visualization with Tableau

Our second workshop is an introduction to the creation of interactive data visualizations with Tableau. This workshop is aimed to anyone that wants to explore and learn the possibilities of this amazing software, and no previous experience with Tableau is necessary.

We will learn how to prepare data in Excel for use in Tableau, how to create various interactive statistical charts, maps and dashboards, and how to upload and integrate then in your own website.

by the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • prepare and organize datasets and import them into Tableau.
  • build data visualizations with maps and charts.
  • use calculations, parameters and scripts, and add interactive elements such as filters and tooltips.
  • combine multiple components in interactive dashboards.
  • publish your interactive data visualizations on the web, and send a link, embed the code in your webpage or export a PDF to create a print graphic in Illustrator.

Juan and Samuel Velasco founded 5w Infographics in 2001. 5w Infographics is an award-winning design and consulting company that specializes in information-driven projects. Today, we have offices in New York, Washington D.C., and Madrid.

Juan Velasco was the Art Director of National Geographic magazine from 2008 to 2014. Previous to National Geographic, he worked as a graphics artist for El Mundo (Spain) and as the Graphics Art Director for The New York Times.

Juan has won over a hundred Society for News Design and Malofiej awards (including the Best of Show Award in 2013), as well as awards from the Society of Publication Design and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He was a Pulitzer Prize finalist as part of a team at The NY Times.

Juan is a frequent speaker and trainer in the field of information graphics and has taught workshops or lectured in over 20 countries.

Samuel Velasco was one of the original founders of the daily newspaper El Mundo (Madrid), in 1989, whose art department quickly became the center of a “boom” of infographics in Europe. From 1990 to 1996 El Mundo was recognized with hundreds of awards by the Society for News Design. Samuel alone won more than thirty.

In 1996, Samuel moved to the U.S. and became an Art Director at Fortune magazine, where he was responsible for the design of features and department stories, while at the same time being heavily involved with the infographics department. During this time, Samuel also worked as a freelance infographic artist. In 2006 Samuel left Fortune to devote his talents to 5w Infographics on a full-time basis.

5w Infographics has won hundreds of international awards for its work on information design. Clients include The New York Times, National Geographic, Time magazine, Fortune, The Economist, the Smithsonian Museums, and the National Academy of Sciences, among others.
