This two-day workshop is a comprehensive introduction to the creation of infographics and data visualization. With a mix of theory and practice, the workshop is aimed at professionals and students interested in developing the skills to produce engaging, insightful visual storytelling with their content.

We will learn how to gather and prepare data, the Do’s and Dont’s of working with numerical information and charts, and the principles of visual hierarchy, color, typography, illustration, and narrative to create impactful infographics.

Attendees will sketch out infographics, storyboard motion graphics and create / publish their interactive data visualizations and web maps with the help of Tableau Public. The class will discuss award-winning projects and offer an overview of tools and strategies for creating infographics and data visualization.

  • plan or storyboard interactive graphics and learn the fundamentals of producing animated and interactive graphics.
  • expand your knowledge about the most-up-to-date tools and resources available to create infographics and data visualizations.

The instructors

Juan and Samuel Velasco founded 5w Infographics in 2001. 5w Infographics is an award-winning design and consulting company that specializes in information-driven projects. Today, we have offices in New York, Washington D.C., and Madrid.

Juan Velasco was the Art Director of National Geographic magazine from 2008 to 2014. Previous to National Geographic, he worked as a graphics artist for El Mundo (Spain) and as the Graphics Art Director for The New York Times.

Samuel Velasco was one of the original founders of the daily newspaper El Mundo (Madrid), in 1989. El Mundo's art department quickly became the center of a “boom” of infographics in Europe. In the U.S., he became an Art Director at Fortune magazine.

5w Infographics has won hundreds of international awards for its work on information design. Clients include The New York Times, National Geographic, Time magazine, Fortune, The Economist, the Smithsonian Museums, and the National Academy of Sciences, among others.

Day One

  • 1The role of infographics and data visualization in visual storytelling

    • Identifying opportunities and needs for infographics in text-driven reports and presentations, and deciding what type would work best.
    • Choosing the right focus, angle and level of complexity.
    • Providing context and adequate comparisons.
    • Exercise: speed sketching.
  • 2Charts: working with data

    • Chart types. When to use them.
    • Working with numbers. Key concepts visualizing data.
    • Design of charts.
    • Information sources.
    • Quick exercises.
  • Lunch break
  • 3Using maps

    • Geographic maps.
    • Thematic or data maps. Types.
    • Map design issues. Editing, typography, hierarchy.
    • Tools and resources for modern mapping.
    • Quick exercise.
  • 4Infographics design

    • Hierarchy and content organization, typography, color.
    • 10 rules to design complex infographics.
  • 5Hands-on group exercise

    • Groups will sketch out (by hand) an infographic with multiple components (Illustrations, maps and charts). We’ll discuss content/editorial choices, alternative approaches to showing the data and telling the story, visual choices and design issues.

Day Two

  • 6Creativity and styles:
    tools and resources

    • Finding good ideas for infographics.
    • Showcase of best graphics, old and modern.
    • Overview of styles.
    • The best software tools available; what each is used for.
  • 7Digital infographics on web/mobile

    • Key concepts in interactivity and navigation.
    • Interactive graphics with code: D3 and other tools.
  • 8Motion graphics with Adobe After Effects and 3D

    • Examples and process. Storyboarding.
  • Lunch break
  • 9Hands-on: using Tableau

    • On a guided introduction to Tableau, participants will work individually on several interactive data visualizations with charts and maps from a series of provided Excel datasets, and publish them to the web.
  • 10Finish hands-on group exercise

    • Participants will sketch out (in paper) a digital version of the infographic created the previous day. There will be two choices:
      • a. An interactive version, with emphasis on user experience and navigation, and methods/ideas to add interactivity to content.
      • b. A motion graphic storyboard.
  • 11Q&A. Bibliography and resources

    • We´ll provide participans with practical resources to use after the workshop.

Class size

The class size is typically around 35.


We’ll start at 9:00 am and finish around 5:00 pm. There will be breaks in the morning and afternoon sessions and a lunch break of around one hour.


You are encouraged to bring a wireless-enabled laptop with the free Tableau Public software installed. Adobe Illustrator is useful but not required (you can use a free trial version).


Coffee and pastries or light snacks will be available during breaks. Lunch is on your own. The location is near to multiple food establishments.

Student cancellations

Up to 7 days before the workshop starts we will offer 100% refunds. After that refunds will be of 50%.

Event cancellations

If the event needs to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances you will be offered a 100% refund. Refunds will be limited to registration costs: 5W Infographic LLC is not liable for any other costs incurred, such as travel or lodging.
